My Favorite Japanese Drama

Into the White Night

Into the White Night exists both as a drama and a film, but I only watched the Japanese drama version. The original work is a novel by Higashino Keigo. I watched the drama first and then read the original novel. In the novel, there is not a single scene in which the male and female protagonists meet. In contrast, the drama portrays them together from beginning to end—sharing guilt from childhood, living apart because of a tragic fate, and carrying the burden of what feels like a “true love” built on shared sin. The reason for this difference is that the drama’s producer and writer wanted to show them meeting and loving each other, at least within the world of the drama. In the series, their love is portrayed as deeply sorrowful and heartbreaking. That is why it was shocking to discover that in the novel, there are no scenes of them meeting at all.
